The maritime rate charged on the Asia-Mexico trade route, mainly with China, reached 4,082 dollars per 40-foot container on average last September, the highest increase that has been generated in the market in recent years, according to the EAX index of Eternity México.
The amount reached in the ninth month of 2020 represented an increase of 186.9% compared to a month before (when it registered 1,423 dollars on average), a phenomenon that was stimulated by a great demand for spaces (containers).
According to the most recent data available from the Bank of Mexico, the accumulated value of total imports during the first eight months of 2020 amounted to 241,121 million dollars, an amount 20.7% lower than that observed in the same period of 2019, a fall derived from the COVID-19 effect.
From January to August of this year, purchases of consumer goods have represented 11.7% of total imports.
